Why I made SilMaker
Sometimes you only need the shape of a person, animal, or object for a worksheet, slide, or thumbnail. Opening a full design app and tracing the subject by hand can turn that small task into a long one.
So I built SilMaker to get it done in a few steps: choose a photo, check the selection, pick a style. If you'd rather keep the subject's colors, background removal gives you a cutout instead of a solid shape.
What happens to your photo
Your photo is processed on your device, inside the browser. Finding the subject, editing its edges, and saving the PNG all happen there. SilMaker does not upload your selected photo to its servers.
The first photo may take longer while the browser downloads the image-processing model. Files that already have transparency, and some images with simple backgrounds, can be processed without it. Refreshing or closing the page clears the current work, so save any result you want to keep.
What Smart Brush does
Automatic selection can miss a strand of hair or keep a patch of background. Use Add to restore a missing area and Remove to erase an unwanted one. Adjust Brush size for the part you are editing, and zoom in around small details.
Check the result against the original before saving. Hair, fur, bicycle spokes, reflections, and transparent objects can be difficult to separate, especially when the subject and background have similar colors.
What the tool cannot do
SilMaker saves PNG images. If you blow up a small PNG, the edges can go soft or jagged. For big prints or cutting machines, start from a larger photo or finish the shape in a vector editor.
It cannot rebuild a hand, ear, or other detail cut off by the edge of the original photo.
A different source photo is often a better choice when the subject is blurred, hidden, or hard to distinguish from the background.
About the examples
Every guide puts the source image next to what SilMaker made from it. A few examples come from earlier versions of the tool, and the captions say so. In the worksheet, slide, and poster examples, the text and backgrounds were added afterwards in a separate app.
