Use an outline to emphasize a subject in a thumbnail
An outline can direct attention to a person, object, or action without hiding the entire photograph. Because the line follows the detected mask, inspect the selection before the thumbnail design begins.

Choose a subject with a distinct outer contour and leave visual separation around it. At thumbnail size, a face, ball, or product can merge into nearby scenery even when it looks clear at full size.
The basketball example deliberately includes an unwanted background structure. It is a limitation example, not a finished thumbnail or a claim that the tool selected only the player.

Correct the boundary before styling
The first outline is the documented automatic export. The follow-up uses seven fixed source-pixel erase paths through the production brush rasterizer and merge operation; it is a reproducible mask-pixel example rather than proof of a live UI session.
A line cannot repair an incorrect mask. Small corrections are easier to assess when you compare the outline with the original photo.
- Process the photo and zoom into unwanted connected areas.
- Use Smart Brush to remove a background fragment or add a missing connected subject area.
- Switch to Outline and inspect the line at the intended thumbnail scale before downloading.

Place the outline in a design tool
Export a transparent outline, then position it over the thumbnail background in your editor. Add headline text away from the most recognizable edge so the subject remains readable.
The background, type, crop, and any glow or shadow are design-editor choices. They are not part of the PNG exported by SilMaker.

Check the delivered size
Preview the finished thumbnail at its actual publishing dimensions. Fine line loops, fingers, and sports equipment may become noisy or vanish after scaling.
Raster outlines do not become infinitely sharp when enlarged. Use a source and export size appropriate for the target platform.
Frequently asked questions
Why is an extra object outlined?
It may be connected to or mistaken for the subject by automatic selection. Remove that area with Smart Brush and inspect the new line.
Is the outline an SVG?
No. SilMaker exports raster PNGs. Use vector software when you need editable strokes or unlimited scaling.
